How to Plan the Perfect Engagement Session in Big Sur
Big Sur is one of the most magical places in California to capture your love story. With its dramatic cliffs, towering redwoods and moody coastal light, it's no wonder so many couples choose it as the backdrop for their engagement photos. But Big Sur is wild — in the best way — and planning your session here takes a little insider knowledge.
As a Big Sur engagement photographer, I’ve hiked the trails, chased the light and found those quiet little corners where magic happens. Here’s everything you need to know to plan an engagement session in Big Sur that feels effortless, elevated and unforgettable.
Choose the Right Time of Year
Big Sur is beautiful year-round, but each season offers something a little different.
Spring (March–May): Wildflowers, green cliffs and softer crowds. One of my favorite times.
Summer (June–August): Warmer, but often foggy near the coast. Great for moody, romantic sessions.
Fall (September–November): Golden light, fewer tourists, and crisp sunsets.
Winter (December–February): Expect dramatic skies and more weather — but fewer people and incredible light.
Pro Tip: Weekdays are best for avoiding crowds and getting more privacy in popular spots.
Pick Your Dream Location
You can’t go wrong in Big Sur, but the vibe you want matters. Here are some of my favorite engagement locations:
Garrapata State Park: Golden cliffs, wild waves, epic overlooks
Pfeiffer Beach: Dreamy arches, purple sand, and soft light
Redwoods near Glen Oaks: Quiet, peaceful, and perfect for cozy moments
Bixby Creek Bridge (from afar): Iconic backdrop — best paired with another quieter spot
Hidden pull-offs: Want something totally unique? I’ve got secret spots you won’t find on Google
What to Wear for Your Big Sur Engagement Photos
This matters more than you think — because the wind, cliffs, and vibe of Big Sur call for outfits that move with the moment.
Do:
Bring 2 outfits (one dressy, one casual or cozy)
Choose pieces with movement: flowy dresses, open coats, linen, soft layers
Stick to neutral tones, earthy colors or muted jewel tones
Dress for wind: fitted tops, double-sided tape, layers
Avoid:
Busy patterns, neon colors or heavy logos
Anything too tight or stiff — you will be walking, exploring, and breathing it all in
Bonus: I send you an outfit guide with inspiration + my favorite local stylist recs when you book.
Do You Need a Permit?
Some Big Sur locations — especially state parks — may require a photography permit. Others don’t. Don’t stress though — I help handle all of this when you book with me.
Here’s the general rule:
Garrapata State Park: Usually does not require a permit for small sessions
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park: Likely needs a permit — we’ll plan ahead
Pfeiffer Beach: Access road is privately maintained; no permit, but timing is key
I always help my couples navigate the logistics so you can focus on being in the moment.
What’s the Best Time of Day to Shoot?
Golden Hour (1–2 hours before sunset):
The most flattering light with warm tones and soft shadows. Most couples choose this option — and for good reason.
Foggy Mornings or Overcast Days:
Still stunning! Big Sur looks incredible in moody light. If it’s cloudy or misty, your images will feel soft, romantic, and editorial.
Bonus Tips for a Magical Session
Embrace the wild: The wind, the salt air, the fog — it’s all part of the experience.
Leave early: Cell service is spotty and the roads are slow. Build in extra travel time.
Bring water, comfortable shoes, and layers — we’ll likely walk a bit!
Make it a date: Grab coffee before or dinner after. Turn the session into a memory.
